There are numerous definitions of the word "creativity". Here is one:
Creativity is the experience of thinking, reacting, and working in an imaginative and idiosyncratic way which is characterized by a high degree of innovation and originality, divergent thinking, and risk taking. (from: www.usm.maine.edu/~trudy/frame/fgloss.htm)

We need to encourage children to use and develop their creativity. Creativity is essential to one's originality, individuality and life accomplishments. Being creative is never running out of solutions! You can create what you need, transform what you have or see what is with a different eye! Just like any skill or characteristic, the more you allow yourself to be creative the more you will be! Creativity saves us from boredom! It allows the most amazing art of all shape and form to enter this world... (Ms. Furey)


Creativity for Success

Creativity and innovation are important keys to success in today's rapidly changing world. Process improvement, problem solving, recruiting, retaining and motivating employees, decision making, dealing with limited resources, satisfying customers, and rapidly changing technology are all examples of business realities that require creative solutions. Yet, innovative thinkers are often tough to find today.
Somewhere along the line, many adults have forgotten how to use their imagination to think and solve problems out of the box. Roger von Oech, in his book A Whack on the Side of the Head, recounts a teacher's exercise in examining creativity. The teacher drew a dot on the chalkboard and asked a class of sophomores to identify it. They responded with the obvious: a chalk dot. She noted that the day before she had asked a group of kindergartners, and they had come up with numerous examples of what it might be: the top of a telephone pole, a squashed bug, an owl's eye, a cigar butt, a rotten egg, and so on. Somewhere between childhood and adulthood many of us lose the ability to be creative and search for more than one right answer.
So how can we as adults regain and maintain our spirit of fun and creativity? Here are a few tips:

Be curious.
Practice developing your curiosity by asking questions to get a better understanding, or to see things from a different perspective. Some questions you might ask:1 What are you taking for granted?2 What are you assuming is impossible?3 What if ...4 Why do we ...

Celebrate your failures.
There are many inventions we view as essentials today that exist only because someone recognized their failure as an opportunity. Examine what can be learned from each "failure." It may be an opportunity to create a new product, improve a process, or solve a problem. Look for ways to make this type of evaluation part of your normal practices so the entire workforce is encouraged to think more creatively!

Nurture your inner child.
Look for ways to become a kid again. Watch children at play and remember what things brought you joy as a kid. Consider what brings you joy today and take time out to explore your playful side. For example, fly a kite, build a model train, gaze at the clouds to identify the shapes you see, go for a walk in the woods and look at the plant and animal life, or simply daydream. Taking time away from the pressures of a tense situation can help free your mind so you're ready to see things more clearly and creatively.
These are just a few of the ways you can learn to be more creative to achieve the success you deserve. Remember, it's never too late to start. Good luck and have fun!

Brain Gym!!!!!!











What is Brain Gym?

Brain Gym is made of simple and fun kinesthetic activities that enhance the overall learning experience of any individual by stimulating and activating specific pathways in the brain. In other words, it's a workout for your brain. Which also means that the more you do it, the more you will improve your overall performance as a learner and as a thinking individual.

I practice Brain Gym with my students and teach them how to use the exercises for when they need to prepare themselves for specific tasks. For example, there are activities to stimulate your brain for writing before a test; or prepare your brain to focus on a problem; or prepare your brain to listen to important information during a class/lesson. Different activities and movements have different effects on your brain.

I also use these activities to set the mood in my classroom. First period of the day, students might be sleepy and some of these activities are aimed to wake your brain up and prepare you for active learning. It raises the attention level. A class might also come in with too much energy. If students are "hyper", they can't focus on their work. In this case, I use Relaxation and Deep Breathing activities to help them calm down quickly so we can get to work!

These activities and techniques allow me to create the mood and the state of mind I need students to be in in order to learn efficiently the skills I'm helping them develop/acquire. Spending 2-3 minutes of class time practicing these activities actually allow them to give their full attention to the material they are learning. They do notice a difference!!!!! They see the difference it makes in the way they feel!!!! I now see students getting ready to go in someone else's class for a test and practice the Brain Gym exercises I taught them before they go in.

Brain Gym is a tool they learn to master and use for their own benefit. Once they know how to do it, they are in charge of it!!!!!

In addition to Brain Gym, I add Relaxation and Meditation techniques to the activities I practice with students. Nowadays life is busy, demanding and stressful! In order for the brain to function at its best, it is essential to calm your body and focus your mind. Stress reduces intellectual performance and leads to exhaustion and depression!
Relaxation, Meditation and Brain Gym, with a healthy diet and lifestyle, leads to higher self-esteem, higher performance in every aspect of one's life, well being and happiness!

I truly believe in these techniques and the positive effect they have on any individual who practices them regularly. I would love to tell you more about it!
